After a decade of matching customers to skip bins across Australia, the single most common mistake I see is ordering a bin that's too small. Here's how to get it right the first time.
The quick rule of thumb
One cubic metre is roughly one standard box trailer load, or about four to five wheelie bins. So a 4m³ skip holds around four trailer loads. If you're standing in front of your pile of junk trying to estimate, count trailer loads and add 20% — waste always expands once you start pulling it apart.
Common sizes and what they suit
- 2m³ – 3m³ (mini skips): Small declutters, a single room, garden tidy-ups. Fits on most driveways.
- 4m³ – 6m³: The workhorse range. Kitchen or bathroom renovations, moving-house clear-outs, medium landscaping jobs. A 6m³ is our most commonly booked size for a reason.
- 8m³ – 10m³: Full house clean-ups, deceased estates, large renovation strip-outs, big green waste jobs.
- 12m³ – 15m³: Builders' waste on construction sites, office fit-out strip-outs, multi-room renovations.
- 20m³ – 30m³ (bulk bins): Commercial projects, factory clear-outs, major demolition. These are hook-lift bins and need decent access.
Why one size up almost always wins
The price difference between a 4m³ and a 6m³ bin is usually modest. The cost of ordering a second bin because the first one filled up is not — you pay a full second hire including delivery. If you're on the fence between two sizes, take the bigger one.
Heavy waste changes the maths
If your load includes soil, brick, concrete or tiles, size isn't the only constraint — weight is. Heavy waste is typically restricted to smaller bins or has fill-level limits, because trucks have legal lifting limits.
