The sizes that actually exist in Australia

Australian skip bins are sold in cubic metres, not cubic yards — if a guide talks about "10-yard dumpsters" or "roll-offs", it's written for the US market and its sizes don't exist here. For trade work the range that matters runs from 4m³ to 12m³. Smaller bins (2–3m³) suit household tidy-ups; on a work site they fill before smoko.

What each size handles on a real job

4m³ — a bathroom strip-out, a small kitchen rip-out, or the offcuts from a single-room reno. Roughly six box-trailer loads. If the job produces tiles, rubble or concrete, this is often the right size anyway: dense material fills the allowance long before the bin looks full, so going bigger doesn't help — booking the right waste category does.

6m³ — a full kitchen plus laundry, a deck removal, or a garage clear-out on a renovation. The most common single-trade size.

8m³ — a whole-house internal strip-out staged over a week, roofing jobs, or a multi-room reno with framing and plasterboard.

10–12m³ — demolition prep, a full site clean at lock-up, or a builder running several trades at once. Above this you're into hook bins, which most suburban sites can't take on the driveway.

Two things stand out in the real numbers. Melbourne's 6m³ costs only $28 more than its 4m³ — when the ladder is that flat, take the bigger bin. Sydney CBD postcodes run dear at every size; suburban Sydney postcodes price well below these figures, so quote the actual delivery postcode, not the city.

Weight: how it actually works here

We don't publish weight limits, and any guide quoting you "X tonnes per bin" is guessing — the allowance is set by the bin product you book, not by a national rule. What matters on site is booking the category that matches the load: concrete, brick and soil go in a heavy-waste or clean-fill bin priced for dense material; putting them in a general bin is how a load gets knocked back in the driveway. Estimate by what's going in, not by how full it looks — dense material reaches the allowance while the bin still looks half empty.

Placement and permits
